Agenda Item Summary: ACPS has a standing MOU with APD that requires review and approval every two years. The MOU must be signed no later than November 2, 2020. The Office of Safety and Security Services will provide an update on the final edited version.
Background: Virginia code 22.1-280.2:3 requires School Boards in each school division in which the local law-enforcement agency employs school resource officers (SROs) to enter into a memorandum of understanding (MOU). This MOU between the school division and the local law-enforcement agency will set forth the powers and duties of SROs. For the 2020-2022 review process, ACPS and APD formed a joint-committee to review the past and future MOU. This review process included a public hearing, community feedback survey and School Board work session. The discussion will highlight the latest changes incorporated into the new MOU based on recommendations from Board Members at the October 15, 2020 work session.
Recommendation: The Superintendent recommends that the School Board approve the revisions to the Memorandum of Understanding and authorize the agreement between ACPS and APD.
