Agenda Item Summary: The Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS)Continuity of Learning Plan 3.0 will involve providing summer learning options for all students to extend and refine their learning and address academic gaps extending from school closings. Summer Learning through engagement and enrichment will begin on July 6, 2020, and end on July 31, 2020. Summer learning will include virtual asynchronous and synchronous learning opportunities, credit recovery, learning kits, and enrichment in the Fine Arts.

This comprehensive and integrated approach to educational programming will also support students with disabilities and English learners. This year's summer learning goal is to engage, enrich, and prepare students in anticipation of the school division's projected reopening in September of 2020.
Background: Traditionally, ACPS' summer programming has offered over 20 programs in nine schools and has consistently served approximately 3,800 students. Most of the summer programming has been by invitation only and geared towards students in Tier II and III based on our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).

In contrast, our Summer Learning through Engagement and Enrichment will be available to all ACPS students. In collaboration with parents, guardians, and counselors, all students will choose the instructional program that best addresses their priority needs. Although not mandatory, summer participation will ensure that learning gaps or losses extending from school closings since March 13, 2020, are addressed and that a range of enhancement and enrichment activities are available to students during their summer break.
Recommendation: The Superintendent recommends that the School Board review the information within this memo and attachments.
