Agenda Item Summary: More schools are fully accredited this year than in the past seven years. Writing results showed improvements while Math results showed decline across subgroups. Moving forward ACPS must focus on: improving math performance across all levels and subgroups; elementary reading as a foundational skill; and reversing subgroup performance in areas with the largest gaps to state counterparts (Hispanic, SWD, and EL).
Background: The Assessment Update: 2017-2018 Preliminary Results is provided to apprise stakeholders to both preliminary division and school level performance on key assessment results during the 2017-2018 school year. Many of these data are preliminary and are subject to change over the course of the coming month(s). As additional results become available (e.g. SAT, ACT and VA On-Time Graduation rates), supplementary analyses and reports will be provided.
Preliminary SOL, PALS, and AP data are presented in the update. SOL results are presented through both the old and new state Accreditation accountability systems (Tables 1-6). Table 7 provides division-level federal results. Figures 1-7 and Tables 8-11 present growth analyses for the PALS assessments. Table 12 shows a summary of preliminary AP Key Elements for the 2017-2018 school year as well as thirteen comparison years.

SOL data are synthesized within the attached PowerPoint including Accreditation results, division level performance overall and by subgroup, and finally what the next steps will be for the division moving forward in 2018-2019 based on these outcomes.

These summative results and analyses are a critical component of informing decisions across stakeholder groups and will be analyzed and reported out annually.
Recommendation: The Superintendent recommends review of the Assessment Update: 2017-2018 Preliminary Results for possible planning, procedural, programmatic, and/or budgetary changes.
