Agenda Item Summary: In recent weeks, the offices of Maintenance and Custodial Services, Educational Facilities and Safety and Security have been actively engaged with George Washington staff, students and community stakeholders. There has also been forward momentum on two priority testing efforts. A summary of noted efforts is below:

1. PTA Meeting (1/27/2020)- Provided a Facilities and Operations presentation. The presentation spoke to historical facility issues, the ongoing water quality assessment and upcoming summer projects. The presentation allowed for PTA stakeholders to provide feedback on the updates, ask questions and voice additional concerns. The presentation is currently posted on the GW website.
2. Tour with “Standing 4 Tomorrow” Student Group (2/3/2020) - The ACPS Interdepartmental team toured the building with the students. The students identified areas needing attention from Maintenance, Educational Facilities and Safety & Security. The identified items have been put into a comprehensive matrix; the matrix is being updated as items are being addressed and/or completed.
3. GW Staff Meeting (2/18/2020) - Provided a Facilities and Operations presentation. The presentation offered an opportunity to have a collaborative discussion on all issues, including the work order request process. In short, many of the staff’s process recommendations are being adopted to ensure Maintenance and Educational Facilities are aware of issues and provide a timely response.
4. Water Quality, Retesting Update for GW – Retesting of elevated outlets was completed on 02/19/20. Results of the retesting effort are projected to be received on 03/11/2020.
5. Indoor Air Quality Assessment for GW – The comprehensive Indoor Air Quality Assessment was scheduled to occur over two consecutive weekends. The first part of the assessment occurred on Saturday, 02/29/2020 and the second part of the assessment occurred on Saturday, 03/07/2020. Results are projected to be received by 03/31/2020. There was extensive coordination with GW administration and RPCA in order for this assessment to occur over the weekend with minimal interruption to previously scheduled activities.
Background: ACPS’ Department of Facilities and Operations is continuing efforts to be more attentive, transparent and responsive to our schools. Specifically, we have been working to address concerns, provide updates and create opportunities for partnership with George Washington Middle School. The Interdepartmental Team (comprised of Facilities and Operations, Communications and Student Services) has met with the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), Standing 4 Tomorrow Student Group and George Washington administration and staff. The ACPS Interdepartmental Team has provided general updates, an understanding of upcoming projects and a forum for all stakeholders to speak to their concerns and offer recommendations. Collectively, the ACPS Interdepartmental Team is developing an action and communication plan which captures the issues, addresses them, and provides transparent updates.
Recommendation: The Superintendent recommends that the School Board review the George Washington Middle School, Maintenance, Facilities and Safety & Security Updates.
