Agenda Item Summary: Preliminary Federal SOL Results for 2015-2016 are being provided to inform the School Board of division and school level performance in advance of the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) public release on August 16th. ACPS has seen growth in pass rates for all students in Reading, Math, and Science, which have been areas of focus over the past three years. Improvements in individual subgroup performance are evident. The focus remains on sustaining and continuing growth while also further advancing subgroup performance in an effort to continue to narrow existing achievement gaps.
Background: All SOL data within Virginia are used to calculate results for federal accountability, which has historically been under No Child Left Behind (NCLB) but is currently transitioning to the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The same SOL data are also used to calculate results for Virginia’s state Accreditation accountability system. The two accountability systems employ slightly different calculation methodologies and therefore pass percentages in many cases differ. The public release of data on August 16th will only include data calculated based on the federal methodology. Virginia’s state level accountability system, Accreditation, is scheduled for public release September 14th with preliminary results provided to the Board in advance of the September 1, 2016 Board work session.
Recommendation: Review the Preliminary 2015-2016 Federal SOL Results PowerPoint and the Preliminary 2015-2016 Federal SOL Results by School and Content Area for possible planning, procedural, programmatic, and/or budgetary changes. These results, as well as preliminary state Accreditation results, will be presented and discussed during the September 1st work session.
