Background:

The Career and Technical Education Advisory Committee (CTEAC) is pleased to submit the 2019-2020 annual report to the Alexandria City School Board. Due to school building closures, the CTEAC met three times during the school year and provided input, feedback, and recommendations on the many topics covered about Career and Technical Education (CTE). The CTEAC consists of 15 members representing teachers, students, parents, workforce, business, labor union, CTE staff, and school board liaison.
A significant function of the CTEAC was the spending approval of the federal 2019-2020 Perkins funds ($329,607.94) and approval of the 2020-2021 Perkins plan budget ($332,541.30) for the expansion and improvement of CTE programs. The CTEAC received updates on mandated state and federal reports on CTE enrollments, demographics, program completers; the progress of the GW/ACPS Governor’s Health Sciences Academy; student Work-Based Learning opportunities; and development function of ACPS Industry Advisory Boards (IABs).
Major focuses of all meetings were dual enrollment options and industry certifications for students to meet the new graduation requirements, including the Profile of a Virginia Graduate. The CTEAC explored networking for fundraising and scholarship ideas for CTE students. The ACPS education consultants presented on the role of IABs within the Education Design Team (EDT). To support the business community, the CTEAC continues to advocate for teaching workplace readiness skills in CTE classes. The CTEAC supports continuing a CTE marketing and awareness campaign to enhance outreach and program publicity to stakeholders (students, parents, businesses, school counselors, etc.).
The CTEAC identified the following CTE program strengths: diverse course offerings; numerous completer sequences; industry certification testing options available for student credentialing;
CTE student organizations; dual enrollment opportunities to give students college credits; career pathway development; and teaching workplace readiness skills.
Significant highlights from CTE Advisory Committee for 2019-20 include: held an election resulting in a change in leadership; review of House and Senate bills affecting CTE; membership growth to include Automotive Industry and Community College/Labor Market intelligence; partnership with the Industry Advisory Boards (IABs); approval of the new Perkins V local plan and application; review of the CTE Annual Performance Report fo
