Agenda Item Summary: The School Board has several advisory committees that support the work of the Division. Advisory committees provide expertise, facilitate community input, and utilize multiple sources of information to advise the Board on areas for continued growth and improvement. The School Board benefits from its partnerships with the community, particularly the experience and insight provided by its volunteer committees. It is essential for the Board to assess the processes, goals and support required by its advisory committees to keep them functioning and thriving. After the February 9, 2021 Advisory Committee Leadership Meeting, it was determined that the Board could better support the work of the advisory committees by doing the following:
• Improve the perception of and/or increase the "value add" of each advisory committee to the work of the School Board by providing input on its Scope of Work;
• Develop a centralized process for recruitment and retention of membership;
• Develop standard processes/guidance for increasing the diversity of advisory committee representation (focus on racial diversity); and
• Develop a process for the Board to publicly share and provide feedback on the Scope of Work/ and Annual Report of each advisory committee.

The Board Chair recommends the formation of an Ad Hoc School Board Advisory Support Committee. The role of the committee will be to:

• Develop the Ad Hoc School Board Advisory Support Committee’s Scope of Work;
• Identify 2-3 SMART goals required to meet each of the needs identified above;
• Present the Scope of Work and resulting goals to the School Board for approval; and
• Provide ongoing support and guidance to the advisory committees by overseeing the implementation and execution of Board-approved goals.

The Chair recommends the following Board Members for appointment to the Ad Hoc School Board Advisory Support Committee:

• Jacinta Greene
• Margaret Lorber
• Michelle Rief
• Heather Thornton
Background: The School Board appoints parents, community members, students and staff who bring a unique perspective on specific topics to its advisory committees. The committees meet throughout the school year and each provides a Scope of Work and Annual Report.

The Alexandria City School Board has six advisory committees:
• Athletic Hall of Fame Advisory Committee (AHOF)
• Budget Advisory Committee (BAC)
• Career and Technical Education Advisory Committee (CTEAC)
• School Health Advisory Board (SHAB)
• Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC)
• Talented and Gifted Advisory Committee (TAGAC)
Recommendation: The Board Chair recommends the School Board appoint Board Members Jacinta Greene, Margaret Lorber, Michelle Rief and Heather Thornton to the Ad Hoc School Board Advisory Support Committee.
