Planning for ACPS’ 2018 summer programming began in fall of 2017. Summer school planning consists of several phases, beginning with facilities, programming, staffing, and student registration.
Facilities
The summer school sites for 2018 are: Minnie Howard, George Washington, George Mason, James K. Polk, Jefferson Houston, and William Ramsay. The Facilities and Curriculum and Instruction departments worked together to conduct programs in spaces where construction or summer repairs are not taking place. This was a challenge as many of the buildings are scheduled to undergo major construction or repair projects this summer.
Programming
ACPS will continue to offer the following programs to students:
• High School Programs: online courses, credit recovery, advanced placement (AP) boot camp, summer bridge program, and new courses
• Middle School Programs: middle school enrichment, drama camp, algebra boot camp, transition to algebra, music camp, and young scholars
• Elementary School Programs: elementary school enrichment, young scholars, music camp, and social skills classes
• English Language Learner Enrichment
• Extended School Year (ESY)
• Summer Language Academy
• Title 1 Primary Preparation Program
• Middle School Prep
• Kindergarten Prep
Staffing
All administrative positions are filled; positions were posted in January 2018. Teacher and paraprofessional positions were advertised in February 2018 and are in the process of being filled.
Student registration
• January 2018: ACPS posted all the summer school opportunities on the ACPS website and in the ACPS Insider
• March 19, 2018: Invitations for the 3rd through 8th grade summer learning program were mailed to families. Families were asked to RSVP by May 1, 2018.
• May 21, 2018: High school summer school (including AP boot camp) registration opens for families.
• Students for ESY, EL summer enrichment, summer language academy, young scholars, and Title 1 primary preparation have been selected.
• The registration for the drama camp, music camp and middle school preparation are currently open to families.

Background:
|
Over the last four years, ACPS expanded its summer learning opportunities from six programs to 19 programs to date. Most of the summer programs are provided free to families. The only programs that require a fee are high school summer school and the summer language academy.
|

Recommendation:
|
The Superintendent recommends continuing summer learning opportunities to support student success.
